From Passion to Purpose: The Story of Austin Swappin’ Founder Sandra Fabian

In a city that proudly embraces individuality, creativity, and a touch of the unexpected, Sandra Fabian has built something truly special. As the founder of Austin Swappin’, she’s turned a simple idea into a thriving, community-driven movement, one that celebrates sustainable fashion, connection, and authenticity with clothing swaps. “I’m a born-and-raised Austinite,” Sandra shares. Growing up in Austin, she was surrounded by a culture that encouraged self-expression and bold ideas. “From a young age, I was always the one with ideas, dreaming things up and adding creativity to whatever I did.”

That creative spark was nurtured by a supportive environment, one that never allowed her to feel limited. Born with symbrachydactyly in her left hand, Sandra never saw her condition as a barrier. Instead, she credits her upbringing for shaping her mindset: “Instead of focusing on limitations, the people around me encouraged my creativity and individuality.” Crediting this early encouragement as the seeds of resilience and confidence that urged her to lean into her creative qualities and create community, directly resulting in her entrepreneurial journey.

Sandra’s biggest inspiration has always been close to home. “My biggest role model growing up has always been my mom,” she says. “She’s someone who works hard, puts her family first, and shows up with strength and love every single day.” But what stands out most is the freedom her mother gave her to be herself. “She never tried to change my personality or dim my creativity. Instead, she supported it and encouraged me to embrace what made me different.”That foundation of unconditional support continued into her adult life, especially through her relationship with her husband. Sandra credits him as a major influence in her entrepreneurial path: “No matter how big or unconventional the idea might be, he’s always the first person cheering me on.” She sweetly adds, “I always joke that if I woke up tomorrow and decided I wanted to become a mechanic, he’d probably say, ‘Alright, let’s go buy the tools.’”That kind of belief is powerful, and it gave her the confidence to take a leap with what would become Austin Swappin’.

Like many great ideas, Austin Swappin’ started small. “In the beginning, Austin Swappin’ was just an idea and a passion project,” Sandra explains. “I didn’t fully realize how big it would grow or how many people it would eventually bring together.” Today, it’s recognized as Austin’s largest monthly clothing swap, drawing hundreds of attendees and supporting local vendors in the process. The concept is simple but impactful: instead of buying new clothes, participants swap items they no longer wear. It’s a model that aligns with the growing shift toward sustainable fashion, a movement gaining serious momentum.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the fashion industry produces over 92 million tons of textile waste annually, highlighting the urgent need for more circular solutions like clothing swaps. By creating a space where clothes are reused instead of discarded, Sandra is directly contributing to reducing that waste. Even more compelling, a report from the Market Research Consensus found that the sustainable fashion market is at a 9.9% growth rate versus 2-3% for conventional fashion. Austin Swappin’ is right at the heart of that shift.

Building something from scratch is never easy, and Sandra faced her share of challenges. One of the biggest? Taking the leap from a free event to a ticketed experience. “At first, I worried people might push back,” she admits. But the decision ultimately transformed the business. “Charging allowed Austin Swappin’ to become a more curated and organized experience.” It’s a lesson many entrepreneurs struggle to learn: valuing your work is essential to sustaining it. “Sometimes valuing what you’re building is exactly what allows it to grow into something even stronger,” Sandra reflects. That mindset has paid off. Today, Austin Swappin’ is not only thriving but also recognized across the city, earning media features and awards along the way.

A pivotal moment in Sandra’s journey came when she partnered with Wanderlust Wine Co. as the official home for Austin Swappin'. “Having a consistent space allowed the event to really grow and evolve into something bigger,” she explains. But more than just a venue, it’s the people behind it who made the difference. “That kind of support and partnership made a huge difference. It allowed Austin Swappin’ to grow in a place that feels like home.” That sense of belonging is central to the experience she’s created, one where community comes first.

For Sandra, success isn’t measured in profits; it’s measured in people. “What really stands out to me the most is seeing hundreds of people show up to our swap every single month,” she says. “Watching a community come together like that is just so amazing.”

It’s more than just swapping clothes. It’s about connection, shared values, and supporting local businesses. In fact, according to Capital One Shopping Research, 74% of all consumers prefer to browse and/or buy locally (as opposed to online). A trend Sandra has tapped into by incorporating local vendors into her events.

Sandra’s advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs is refreshingly simple. “Follow your passion and trust what feels right for you,” she says. “I also believe it’s incredibly important to be unapologetically yourself. No one else can bring what you bring to the table.” That authenticity, she believes, is what draws people in and builds lasting connections. “When you lean into your passion and stay true to who you are, everything else tends to fall into place.”

Balancing life and business can be challenging, but Sandra has found a way to blend the two. “My husband and family are incredibly supportive… they often come help at the swaps, which turns it into something we experience together.” This integration allows her work to feel less like an obligation and more like a shared joy. “For me, it has never been about the money... it’s always about what makes me happy!” And when things feel overwhelming? She steps back and resets. “It’s all about finding balance and choosing what brings you joy.”

Sandra isn’t slowing down anytime soon. “For Austin Swappin’, it’s only up from here!” she says. Her vision includes expanding into nearby cities, creating niche swap experiences, and continuing to support local vendors. At the same time, she’s stepping into a new chapter, building her personal brand, and sharing her story more openly. “I’ve never let my disability define or limit me, and now I want to share that perspective,” she says. “I want to show a different side of what creativity, lifestyle, and disability can look like.”

At the core of everything Sandra does is a deep trust in herself. She points to a lyric that resonates deeply: “Movin’ to the rhythm of my intuition. Anything I want I speak into existence. That’s how I’m living, that’s how I’m winning.” Words she lives by have become a philosophy, guiding her from a creative kid in Austin to the founder of a powerful, community-driven movement.
