From Burnout to Building a Luxury Creative Business: Meet Amanda Reid of Amanda Reid Designs

Some of life's biggest turning points happen when we least expect them.
For Amanda Reid, it began with a calligraphy class she signed up for simply to escape the stress of graduate school. While earning her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2015, she was looking for a creative outlet, something that felt calming amid long hours of studying. She had no idea that one small workshop would eventually lead her to build a thriving luxury creative business serving some of the world's most recognizable brands.

Today, Amanda is the founder of Amanda Reid Designs, a live-event artistry studio specializing in hand engraving, calligraphy, and luxury personalization experiences. But long before she was engraving bottles at brand activations or leading a team of artists, she was simply a creative kid growing up in Houston.
Originally born in New Jersey and raised by Nigerian immigrant parents in Texas, Amanda grew up surrounded by creativity in more ways than she realized. She sang in choir throughout school and college, danced ballet, tap, and step, loved attending plays, and spent countless hours doodling whenever she had the chance. "I was always the kid volunteering to write on the chalkboard or the overhead projector," she says. "I just loved making things look beautiful." That creative spirit was nurtured at home. Her father, an artist with a background in architecture, loved to sing and draw, while her mother frequently planned events for their church's women's ministry. Amanda often tagged along as venues were scouted and banquet spaces transformed before guests arrived. Looking back, she realizes she was unknowingly witnessing the perfect blend of artistry and event production that would later become the foundation of her own business.

Although creativity had always been part of her life, Amanda never imagined it could become a career. After graduating with her doctorate in physical therapy, she stepped into her first full-time role expecting to love it. Instead, she quickly found herself burned out. The demanding schedule left little room for the creative work that made her feel most like herself. Eventually, she made the difficult decision to leave that position and transition into PRN work, giving herself the flexibility to begin creating again. In January 2019, she officially launched Amanda Reid Designs, offering everything from home decor and wedding signage to hand-painted jackets, banners, and calligraphy workshops. Then another unexpected opportunity changed everything.
Later that year, Amanda discovered live engraving and realized calligraphy could become much more than beautiful lettering on paper. Guests could watch personalized pieces come to life right in front of them, turning every interaction into an experience. "I completely fell in love with it," Amanda says. "That completely changed the trajectory of my business."
As the world slowly emerged from 2020, Amanda made the decision to leave wedding stationery behind and fully embrace live events, luxury brand activations, and personalized commissions. The business continued to grow, but for years she balanced entrepreneurship alongside working part-time as a physical therapist.

Then life handed her another unexpected turning point. After experiencing both a pregnancy loss and a personal health crisis in 2025, Amanda found herself reevaluating everything. "Life is short," she says. "I didn't want to keep waiting." The experience gave her the clarity, and courage, to pursue Amanda Reid Designs full time. For years she had questioned whether she could truly support her family as an artist. "I didn't want to be the starving artist," she says. "Being creative is genuinely what I love."
Today, she's doing exactly that. What began as a one-woman business has grown into a team of talented artists creating unforgettable experiences for luxury brands, corporate clients, and celebrations across the country. Like many creative entrepreneurs, Amanda says building the art came naturally. Learning how to run a business did not. Managing finances, creating systems, leading a growing team, and understanding operations became just as important as mastering her craft. Instead of pretending to know it all, she committed herself to remaining a student. "I've tried to stay a student," she says. "Books, networking, educational events, community, I always want to keep learning."
She also remembers walking into some of her earliest luxury events feeling like she didn't quite belong. "As a woman of color who didn't grow up in that world, there were a lot of unspoken rules," she shares. Rather than letting those moments discourage her, she chose to observe, learn, and continue showing up with confidence.

One of Amanda's proudest accomplishments isn't a luxury event or a major brand partnership. It's the community she's built for other artists. For the past three years, she's hosted the Luxury Calligrapher Retreat, bringing together calligraphers and live-event artists from across the country for a weekend of education, connection, and collaboration. The most recent retreat sold out in just three minutes, something Amanda still finds hard to believe.

Creating a space where women can support one another, exchange ideas, and grow alongside one another has become one of the most meaningful parts of her journey. When asked what advice she would give someone building a business, Amanda doesn't talk about chasing rapid growth or going viral. Instead, she encourages entrepreneurs to embrace the slow seasons.
After her social media following unexpectedly grew from just a few thousand followers to over 12,000 almost overnight, she suddenly found herself navigating opportunities she wasn't prepared for. "It was overwhelming," she admits. "I found myself trying to be everything to everyone."
Looking back, she's grateful for the slower pace that followed. Those quieter seasons gave her time to build stronger systems, sharpen her craft, and become the leader her future business would need. "Don't rush growth," she says. "Growth takes time, and that's actually a good thing."

Today, Amanda continues to prioritize the things that matter most. Having experienced burnout firsthand, she's intentional about protecting her peace, making time for her faith, family, and friends, and listening when her body tells her to slow down. "I refuse to stay booked and busy just for the sake of it." That mindset has shaped not only the business she's built but the life she's creating alongside it.
As Amanda Reid Designs continues to grow, she's excited to expand her team, partner with even more incredible brands, and continue investing in the creative community through mentorship and education. Her word for 2026 is stewardship. A reminder to faithfully care for every opportunity, relationship, and season she's been entrusted with.
One phrase has continued to guide her through every chapter of her journey: "Life is too short to not be doing what makes you happy." It's a simple reminder, but one that changed the course of her life—and one she's now helping countless others believe for themselves.
We can't wait to see where Amanda's creativity, faith, and passion take her next, and we'll be cheering her on every step of the way.
